IF: Canned
Posted on July, 31 2008 at 10 PM
Here is my entry into last week’s theme of “canned” on Illustration Friday.
I know, I know. I took forever and almost 7 days to post this! Literally, I barely made the cut-off before the new week’s theme! But you can trust that I did do this last Friday (I wouldn’t think of lying to you … honest). I have just been completely swapped by client work and finishing up the semester strong for my student(s).
I had planned to at least darken some of the lines and even add color, but again, time has gotten away from me. I hope you still enjoy.

Secret Friend Society by DraStudio on Zooomr
In light of the recent Dra Studio re-design, I thought it might be fun to share some of my ruminations and recent thoughts about back-end content management systems and such that I saw as possible solutions for both the this site and the Illustrative. site, but for some reason or another, abandoned. I also wanted to share some of the more influential sites that I found inspiring me into making the latest revisions to the Studio. So if code is your thing and acronyms like XSLT don’t scare you, read on!
For everyone else, I humbly offer you a site that always bring a big smile to my heart; The Secret Friend Society. There isn’t a bad day I have had that a few minutes with Jellaby hasn’t cured. ;) Enjoy!

After a crazy time dealing with an odd waitress at Denny’s, Courtney and I enjoyed some yummy movie trailers. Peep the links and comments and have some fun.
Sixty Six
Oscar – “66? How long did they wait to have this bar mitzvah?
Courtney – “They must have changed the rules on this!”
Watchmen
Oscar – “AAAHH! So amazing.”
Flash of Genius
Courtney – “So it is about windshield wipers? A swipe of genius!”
Disaster Movie
Oscar – “Does anyone even watch these anymore?!?”
Courtney – “Why do they keep making them?!?”
Man On Wire
Courtney – “Is it bad that the only reason I would watch this movie would be hoping the guy would fall?”

Hopefully, I will be able to push out the new Southside site updates by tomorrow, but for now, please enjoy this little sketch and the notes from Ron’s sermon this weekend.
Breaks

I’ve had the words of a song I heard at Status last week stuck in my head for awhile, and after shaking around in my head a bit, this wallpaper is what they turned into. I hope you enjoy, and for those interested, here are my notes from the speaker that night.
IF : Enough
Posted on July, 18 2008 at 11 PM
Okay, so it has been a full week with iPhone, and I have to say that I am still completely ecstatic about it. Between the amazing-ness that is MobileMe “push” synchronization, GPS locations and the sweet sweet App Store, it is perfectly filling in for those moments where my using Nano was not enough and my MacBook Pro was overkill. RSS reading, Flickr exploration, and podcast viewing is up by tons of percent!
Besides the built-in Apple applications and the excellent streaming music apps (Last.fm, AOL Radio, and Pandora), the most used thing on the iPhone for me is Twitterrific. Simple and elegant … just the way I like my UXs.
I did forget to mention in my previous iPhone post about how smooth the transition from Virgin Mobile to AT&T was (activation and # porting took under 5 minutes!), so kudos on that, VM guys!
As the App Store pushed out more new wonderful things for me to download and Apple releases the next update, I’ll make sure to mention it here. Yay for iPhone goodness!
Oh and here is my entry for this week’s Illustration Friday theme of “Enough”. How angry does he look? Eh? What do you think of the little extras (i.e. the interwinding ribbons)? I think the coloring/shading in Photoshop turned out well. Be sure to peep my Flickr stream to see the original red ballpoint pen that this started out as. Laters!
Harboring from Much Sleep
Posted on July, 16 2008 at 12 AM
I don’t trust myself to sleep.
Haunted by memories threaded in so deep.
I see a face; a face I have never know,
but one so lovely and dear, I continually yearn to own.
She is a beauty, in vice and appeal,
speaking words my dreams folly to reveal.
The attraction by which she lures, I do not understand.
Abounding wonderfulness that would stifle any man.
I may not remember her or you or this place in time.
Though the walls are familiar, as is the porch, the swing and the chime.
This block, this walk and this street, hold a vagueness of real,
One barely certain to me, held fairly by means of love congeal-ed.
My eyes are blanketed by dark’s enveloping sheet.
Rest? I am only rewarded by weaknesses engrossing heat.
Tears am I blinking, to drown the near obsession.
Fear? Un-wantingly I run, for dread of painful confession.
Mine is a torment, unknown and relentless.
As night draws near, I begin again to feel the strong presence.
The lurking, the enticing and the remorseless inviting,
To share in lovelies and memories that are but trifling.
More often than not, I fear, man as fallen under this spell.
Been drowned, not screaming; Gagged, not cheering; straight into hell.
I trust not the power of my will, nor the weakness of my mind,
Clear is this vixen; near is this whisper of love to be refined.
… Harsh is the levity found upon waking to steadier mind.
In search of heart

Eric’s anxiousness to see the sketch I drew during today’s sermon inspired me to work up this piece. I went ahead and uploaded the original photo I took, in case you want to play the “Boy’s Life” game of spotting what is different. ;) Enjoy.
He powers up and starts his day;
a few others, in tow, follow his way.
He thinks: “The day will end as the rest”
“Empty, lonely … defeated, at best.”
Stark is his joy and trembling is his hand,
to stumble upon a treasure, so unplanned.
“Consume, relish and to yourself entreat;
rare is the day when love is secured,
while a heart still able to beat!”
IF : Foggy and iPhone
Posted on July, 12 2008 at 06 AM
It is currently 7:00 am the following day, and I am still hyped up on the rush that is iPhone 3G.
My class ran for close to the entire 8 hours, so we (Jodie and I) didn’t get to the Apple Store at Millenia until around 6:30pm. Luckily, Courtney was holding spots for us.
Four or so hours later, we had Chris the Apple Genius help us purchase and set up both of our iPhones. Then it was another 1/2 hour or more just hanging out in the store, drooling about the ease-of-setup that MobileMe made of our contacts, calendars and email.
Leaving the Mall near-midnight (with still about 20-35 people still waiting in line), Courtney and I heading to the LOOP for a midnight showing of “Hellboy II”. I am a big fan of Mignola’s art and writing, so I really enjoyed the show. After a quick ride home, while watching “David Blain spoofs” on YouTube and playing around with Midomi, we all hung out at the house until everyone else feel asleep.
Which brings me to my current state of “ready-to-finally-fall-asleep-ness”. Apple, I had a great day. AT&T, for shame. Del Torro, nice work bringing some much appreciated character detail and creepy crawly organic-ness to the Hellboy movie franchise. Everyone else, enjoy this little sketch for today’s Illustration Friday theme of “foggy”. It came about as I alternated between sitting and standing in the iPhone line … which is why it is on the back of my iPhone 3G flyer. Night!

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Oscar – “If she starts making out with a baby …”
Squiggly worms
Posted on July, 06 2008 at 04 PM
Squiggly worms,
given to and shaping in an
over-abundance of glee;
though warted, hairy and toothed is
how they tend to be.
Their wisdom is strong,
and though I want it much,
the skin they share, I truely fear to touch.
“Stay your distance and keep your way!
“Just shout your words
and I’ll continue my day.”
